My lfs told me that iodine is bad for water quality, but iodide is not and does the same thing. I have read that corals and shrimps need iodine, so do I need both or will iodide be good enough?

Honestly I've never heard anything about Iodine being bad, a lot of people dose it, and it can be pretty benefical to inverts and such. It helps them molt. You have to be careful with it though, because over dosing can kill things in the tank.

I've also never heard of Iodide. I'd just go with Iodine. Enough people use it that there should be no problem with it.

Unless you can accurately test for a substance you add to your tank and know levels of it which are beneficial for the specific corals you keep... then i wouldnt dose it.

Thats just me and my honest opinion

Ok, I have find new info on this, Iodine and iodide seems to be the same atomic number "53" which is Iodum. What differs from them I do not know, and the theory behind it is over my head:%)

For those who whats to know what nsw consists of here you go: The 6 major and 5 minor elements.

There are also more trace elements:

Iodine and Iodide are both forms of the same element. The difference is that Iodide is an ion; incidentally a negatively charged one. Iodine cannot exist without being I2 (when iodine is by itself, it is always a diatomic molecule).

Unfortunately I forget which one we actually use in our bodies, if not both.:%)

Heh. They most likely do not do the same thing. Does chlorine do the same thing as chlorine ions? No. Chlorine gas will kill you, while chlorine ions say from table salt will not kill you. I guess chlorine ions could kill you, but they are also beneficial while you do not need chlorine molecules at all.

Shini hit the nail on the head. Iodide is the ion form of Iodine. Iodine is the molecular form of the element, and is diatomic.

Your LFS guy may be correct. But they then wouldn't do the same thing, as one is bad for the fish and one isn't in that case. But they may be both beneficial.

Maybe look up iodine uses in the aquarium. Maybe some articles could help?
