when i put some new hermit crabs in the tank(all small) the first thing my longnose hawkfish did was swoop down and pull a poor hermit crad out of his shell and ate it.

is this normal?

Yep, flame hawks and Paracirrhites species are known to do this as well. Snails may also be targets, and just about anything in the mobile invertebrate population can be considered as food.
