Gang,

I usually have nothing to contribute to the marine section of FP, but for once I can add some pictures. I ventured into Liana's territory and made a visit to the Riverhead Aquarium on Long Island.

I hope that I don't bore you to death with the shots, I have to say that most pictures came out pretty bad (I took about 250) as my camera was adjusted for freshwater coloration and did not handle the actinic light too well.

I refrain from adding any freshwater pictures here, I will add a separate thread in the general freshwater section for them (not too many came out well and then I ran out of storage space on the camera).

I hope you like the shots, it will be easy for you folks from the dark side to identify my limited knowledge (fading towards zero) of your area in the hobby.

Just like many people, I find sharks to be very interesting and intimidating. The grace with which they peruse this tank is second to none. How come that they never seem to chase any of the other fish in the tank?

Say "Cheeeeeese"



I am most certain that they haven't been trained to smile for the camera, but they sure are making all kind of efforts to allow nice shots. But it was so dark in the tank that very few pics came out nicely.

A school of these fish were in the tank with the sharks, I have no idea what they are called. I really know very little about salt water creatures, and I guess not reading the labels doesn't help either

This was one of the smaller fish in the tank, I would estimate its size to be less than one foot, maybe 10 inches or so.

This creature, on the other hand, was easily the size of myself and moved extremely slow along the bottom of the tank.

As usual, I don't know what kind of fish it is. Maybe you folks can make a quiz out of this, although I am sure that I don't even create a challenge for you.

Next up was the puffer tank. This tank wasn't all too large and only a few fishies were in it.

This one struc me in particular because it appears to me that his teeth would need a trimming very soon.

This one is a box fish, right? Does that mean that they are part of the puffer family? I guess so.

Last but not least for this tank, here is its smallest inhabitant, but I think he is the prettiest if them all. I would estimate its size to be maybe 3 to 4 inches, but I guess the thickness of the glass makes such guesses rather unreliable.

Next up was the oh-so-often photographed Clown fish tank (had other inhabitants as well), with the oh-so-often comment "ah, Nemo". But don't worry, we will see Dori in another tank as well

Clowns make for very good pictures, I think, once when I know how to focus and how to adjust the camera settings properly.

In the tank with the clowns were also a few of these fishies, although I have to say that they didn't seem to be too happy.

This one was looking at me with a facial expression stating "and what is that you want here?"

The next tank to be photographed contained mostly Lion Fish ( right? ), very nice to look at and to photgraph. Their slow movement made it rather easy tocapture details.

Here is another view of this fish, I just love the finnage. It is a shame that there is no freshwater equivalent for them, although I would like them smaller and non-poisenous even better.

The last shot of the Lions is a close-up of a face. He doesn't seem to be too happy either, but he for sure is a keen observer of his environment.

On I went to the smaller Sea Horse tank. Finally, a fish that I, at least on a larger scale, could identify. I took quite a few shots of these fishies, but only one came out remotely descent. Sorry about that.

The rest of the pictures is commited to the spectacular reef tank. Not even one shot that I took can show the true beauty and the manifold colors of this environment.

This tank is also the one where I do not know most of the fish by name, really sorry about that.

To start off, I think this is a school of angels coming at me. Why fish always seem to stare at you?
