There are plunty of places online that you can buy live rock from. What kind of live rock are you looking to get? Fiji? Marshall Island? Etc?

There are a lot of sites right now they offer free shipping on live rock if you order over a certain amount. I haven't YET purchased from one of these sites but I will be soon. I am looking at the following site because they offer FREE overnight if you order over $199, which isn't difficult to do. But I would say if you are ordering only a small amount then shipping out probably get ya.

The problem with ordering online is die-off. Because they aren't going to ship it in water so you have to get it there quickly (overnight) if you don't want a HUGE ammonia spike when curing. (Anyone correct me if I'm wrong) You can also scrub your live rock before putting it in your aquarium and that should be rid of most of the dead stuff.

The website I am looking at is: http://www.exoticfish.com/

Hope I've helped a little bit!

-Josh

edit: BTW, watch sometimes if the per lb price is cheaper then the box price. For marshall island rock on exoticfish.com it's cheaper to buy per pound then to buy a box

Most rock here is $10/lb except 1 store which I also get a discount on everything but live animals and rock doesn't seem to count as a live animal so I get it for about $7/lb. It depends how much your getting. If your buying a large amount such as 30lbs or more then it generally comes out much cheaper regardless of what site you use online. If like me you only need about 10-20lbs then the only place I found which sells smaller than 20lbs per order is premiumaquatics.com and it still comes out to be around $6/lb after shipping is added in. In the end for about $1-2 more per pound I could have picked out the shapes and sizes I wanted and avoided waiting around for my rock to be delivered only to find the heatpack had quit and it's below freezing outside.

I got my rock online for about 1.80 a pound, and it was great stuff. It took me a few months to find it and it was a limited time to buy, but i think if you look around, you can find quality rock for fairly inexpensive.

The thing that is going to kill you is shipping. I had to have 200 pounds of rock shipped from basically hawaii to cincinnati.
