Could you just put Corals in any random spot in your tank and have them move themselves somewhere nice? Thanks.

Not really. Some of them (like Fungia species) can move, but most stay where they are placed. That's why placement is such an important issue when you stick a coral in your aquarium. Sure, some colonial species will drop polyps in an attempt to find them a more favorable area, but it is much better for the coral to just be placed in the right spot from the start.
