I have started a 24 gallon nano, with 33 lbs. of live rock and sand. The tank was started on Sat. Aug 6th. I only have test for KH and Nitrate, which are perfect right now. I plan on taking a water sample to the lfs for more water measurements. About how long does it take for water conditions to accept Hermit Crabs and Snails? I was thinking about 10 snails and 5 hermit crabs, is that apropriate? Later I will be adding 2 Ocellaris clowns, firefish, and a goby/shrimp pair. Also, will Banggai Cardinals be able to go into the tank? I've heard they can be aggressive, is this true?

Most hermits and snails are relatively hardy.

When I brought home my rock, it was put into a fresh batch of uncycled saltwater, and as far as I know, all of my inverts (snails, hermits, plus some starfish and crabs) survived.

Now, this doesn't necessarily mean run out and go buy a clean up crew. I would wait a little longer, until you actually maybe need them to work for you. That way, they'll be healthier/happier, plus more likely to accept the water conditions.

Banner cardinals are known to spawn and breed in home aquaria I believe. Cool fish..cardinals aren't one of my favorites but they're a good choice especially for beginners. I dont believe this specific fish is known for aggression, a quick google search would probably clarify that.

HTH...and best of luck.

EDIT:

BTW...I'd get more test kits if I were you. Make sure you have high range pH, ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte, and I'd recommend calcium too. Salifert is the best brand IME.

Males will eventually fight to the death, with the strongest most dominant surviving. If you want to keep more than one you will need a male/female pair, or a VERY large tank with a lot of rockwork for hiding/territories.

You can tell the difference between males and females based on their jawline, but not until adult size or close to it.

As for stocking with a clean up crew, start out small and add them as you need them. You might be very suprised to find that you dont need as big of a clean up crew as most people suggest. My 180 when it was up only had 4 snails and about 6 hermits. If you add too many and you dont need them you will find that you will need to supplement food for them just so they can survive.

You can add your clean up crew (small) as soon as you have good PH, alk, NO ammonia or nitrIte and your nitrAtes are below 20ppm (but preferably lower).
