I have an old 55 gal glass tank. It had FW fish in it. It has not been used for approximately 12 years. Is it ok to use as a refugiums / sump combination. Any thoughts and/ or suggestion would be appreciated.

It will be fine provided the silicone is still in good shape. Aquariums can last for quite a while, and if yours has been empty most of this time it will have even more years ahead of it.

*The below is provided that copper lasts twelve years, someone else should weigh in on this*

One other consideration is that if you want to keep invertebrates, you can't have used any copper in the old aquarium. If you treated the fifty-five with any copper-based meds that pretty much rules it out.

I'd personally go ahead peel and seal it. 12 years is a long time, any shifts in humidity and temperature during that time will wreak havoc on tank seals. Also, if you reseal it you won't have to worry about copper. It's the silicone that it binds to and releases from over time.

It would have to be a very nice tight seal with some still supple silicone for me to even trust giving it a fill outside to see if it would hold for a few days. A violent break could crack the glass.

I agree that I`d be worried about the seals on the tank. 12 yrs of dryness is going to be rough on the seals.
