I am getting ready to order some more live rock for my aquarium and started to look through the other items they have. One item is Olive Snails (Sand Siffters). I have never heard of them but supposedly these little guys are machines at siffting sand. The site recommends one per ten gallons. Has anyone ever used these guys? Any opinions? Thanks

Hey Josh, could you give a link to the site you are looking at so I can see the snail in question?

Be sure to check the species of those you might get. As some are toxic if/when they die, and could wipe out your entire tank. Most are not however, but some are.

While they are great substrate cruisers, they are carnivorous. They can and might eat some of your fish or other livestock at night. They won't bother corals however. I have kept the orange ones before in my coral reef tank without any problem. I had two in a 75 gal for several years before I took it down (sold them). Some are quite colorful, and most stay around a inch or so in size. But some, like the orange ones I had, get up to 6-7 inches long.

IMO, I suggest you keep at least a 3 inch substrate, so there will be plenty of detritus around for them.

Hey! Sorry for the delayed response...I have been busy and forgot I posted the question...The site I was looking at was www.floridaliverock.com. They are located on the specials page. It doesn't specify the species.
