protein skimmers utilize a natural technology called foam fractionation. All you need to know is that they remove waste from your system, and that makes it easier for you to keep the tank clean.

For a thirty gallon tank, I'd recommend the coralife superskimmer 65 or an aquaC remora.

Ive been told the remoras arent all that good in comparrison to the deltec MCE 300 if you drill the tank however you have alot more skimming options

also i think the remora needs a pump that sits in the tank where as the deltecs is inbuilt

drilling = putting a weir in allowing you to have a sump without all the inconvenience of an overflow box

I use an excalibur skimmer and love the results of it. IMO LR and a skimmer is all you need for good biological filtration.

if you drill the tank and put a sump in generally you can get a much better skimmer for a cheaper price as hang ons are generally overpriced in terms of performance.

I have a 55 gallon mixed reef tank, and I use a Typhoon hang on skimmer (made by D&D marine)it works great! They are very economically priced also!
