Sumps are seperate tanks, plumbed into your main tank. Normaly bellow the main tank. The water will flow down from the main, go into the tank, through sets up baffles (to reduce bubbles). These are used to hold extra water(for better stablilty) and to hide equipemnt(heaters, skimmers, ect.) They can be really helpful.

The following thread should help:
http://fishprofiles.com/files/threads/28621.1.htm?13#

Though not all sumps use wet-dry filters, they still all provide supplemental water volume and can hold equipment, other livestock, etc. Sumps are great for use in both freshwater and saltwater setups.

Nope

But they are less work and easier to mantain IMO.

Sump wont collect detrus unless you do a wet/dry if you add a refuge you get nutrient export/water volume. the best filter for saltwater is live rock past this look for water volume and water turnover IMO....BUT NOT TOO MUCH AIMING FOR 20X IS A BIT EXCESSIVE
