So I was doing some work on my Nano tank today. I used a credit Card to clean the front, changed the filter media, and went to move some rock around a bit. When I picked up one of the pieces I noticed some resistance so I took a closer look.

Hmm what is this pink growth I ask myself. Hmm Wait. What is this very large pink growth with spikes. Surely it can't be what I think. But with a bit of Prodding and poking it was indeed what I thought. Yes folks in my 5 Gallon Nano tank I had a Bristle-worm that was at least 10 inches long. In a large tank this is no big deal. But in a tank this small it is a bit disturbing. For comparison the tank is only about 12 inches wide.
*shivers* And this tank is about 2 feet from my head when I sleep. Hello nightmares.

Its a "pest" that is found in most marine aquariums. They are actually beneficial in small sizes but larger ones can pose a problem. Touching one results in a sting and sometimes their bristles get stuck in the hand.

I have my reef next to my dinner tank...and one night while I was eatting dinner I saw a 1cm thick bristleworm eating a piece of mussle. After seeing it i decided to move the place of eatting to my computer table. It was huge!

Is it possible to catch these giant things?

It must be, or I wouldn't be seeing pics of a six foot long bristleworm outside of a tank.

I don't understand why people are scared of bristleworms...
