What can anyone tell me about these http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=L-Berghia&Category_Code=
I jsut saw these and thought how cool is this! Would they work in a large reef set-up? Are the easy to care for? That is compared to other inverts. Anything else you can tell me would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think they could possibly be a permanent resident in a tank under 150G with tons of LR and therefore a bunch of aptasia. That's all they eat. Without a constant source of aptasia they won't make it very long, and starve to death. That's what I've heard about them anyways. A guy near us breeds those and is always asking about ways to get more aptasia.

Matty got that one right. These things are obligate Aiptasia eaters, and will starve once all Aiptasia is gone from their tank. Compounding the problem is that Berghia breed very readily in captivity, so you often end up with extra mouths to feed. As far as I know, just switching these guys between tanks with Aiptasia problems is the best way to keep them alive. An entire reef club can be serviced this way.

All the aiptasia doesnt have to be gone for them to starve though....Once the aiptasia population is down in their "territory" they will die off instead of moving to the other side of the tank most times. You would need to start a seperate tank and start farming/propagating aiptasia.

Which reminds me Nate...

Is Calfo the one with the Aiptasia speedway filtering system thing?

Maybe that'd be a good experiment actually.

I cant remember if he has one running or not....but he talks about the aiptasia raceway in Coral Prop

There is a local SPS chick here that raises berghia....she has a very hard time keeping enough aiptasia going ot feed them....She even goes as far as trading clean rocks with reef club members for aiptasia rocks

Ohh, I'm going to have to read about this weekend, because my interest has been sparked again.

Not like I'm planning to have an aiptasia raceway anytime sson...at least, not with this tank.

I'll be on a retreat until Saturday night though, which means lots of time in the car. And Coral Prop is going to be the reading. Be warned...after being away for over 24 hours I'm bound to have questions like there's no tomorrow.

As stated above it is all true. But, another thing is, once they die off, the apstasia will come back. Much of that which they eat, is not the entire creature. As many times they cannot get to the base down in the tight crevices of some rocks. Thus, this piece of apstasia will eventually come back. A better source for apstasia eating is a good copper banded butterfly fish. However, be sure your tank is well established, as these fish are very low on the hardiness scale. But, they will keep the apstasia down to nothingness and out of sight.

If you must get one of these, I recomend you only get one. This will decrease the likelyhood of them breeding, and hopefully leave enough apstasia for the individual to live.
