hi there!

i have a fairly new (6 weeks old) 10G sw aquarium (my first marine tank!) that has recently started 'growing' little white dots on the sides of the glass. i looked at them closely, and they have roughly eight see-through 'arms' growing off them (like a sunfish).

the tank has 2" of aragonite as a substrate, and about 10lbs of live rock. it's inhabitants are 5 blue legged hermit crabs and one firefish (which i just added yesterday).

what are these things and are they harmful? should i remove them, and if so, how?

thanks

Sounds like hydroids. Somewhat common in newer systems and will probably die out as their food source is depleted.
