okay I know ammonia starts first, and to fight the ammonia nitrites form, and nitrites are also not good so nitrates form. So what I want to know does nitrates only show up at the end of the cycle or is it possible to have nitrates in the beggining? Also on that note if I havent seen ammonia, and nitrites only nitrates am I DONE? also what if the Nitrates keep going up can I do a water change to bring them down? My parameters are: Ammonia: 0 Nitrites: 0 Nitrates: 20 (They have never ever been that high for me) ph 8.4 temp: 78 Specific gravity: 1.022...

how do I bring those nitrates down? A water change? Am I okay?

It is possible to see Nitrates very early, I know personally my tap water has about a 9ppm reading. This doesn't mean that your tank is cycled. Your Nitrates right now IMO are fine, but water changes are always a good thing. Test your tap water, i'd be willing to bet you have Nitrates in your tap water which is why your seeing them in your test results. Also i'm curious, how long has the tank been set-up and what size tank is it? Good Luck and keep us updated!

do u have protein skimmer in ur tank???

My tank is a 38 gallon It's been set up with salt June 25, I have 36 pounds of LR in my tank. And no I have no protien skimmer. First I cant afford it right now. And second i have a lot of mix feed ack on protien skimmers some say thiey are not nessasary other say its vital im not done with my research! yet that is! Any ways
