hello
this question may seem very stupid to all you reef keepers but this has been bugging me for a little while. anyways here goes. when i got my firt out break of ick back when i started out fishkeeping i bought the blue ick cure with malachite green. it cured some of my fish but killed most others. since then ive done lots of research and have discovered a better method of treating ick.its the salt plus heat method. on my second outbreak i treated with that method and lost no fish. lately ive been resaeching salt water purely for fun as i dont have the cash or time to care for a saltwater tank. ive discovered tht saltwater tanks get ick too . now my question is if ick can live in saltwater what is the use of the salt in treatting it when you have an outbreak in freshwater?this method has worked wonders for me and others but this makes no sense to me. please enlighten me. thanks

fresh water ick or (ichthyopthirius multifilis) is what you have encountered. Saltwater ick or (Cryptocaryon irritans) or white spot disease are not the same little critter, just like fresh and salt water fish arnt the same. you can treat with copper sulfate (never with inverts in a tank) or farmalin or lowering salt levels to 1.009-1.010 specific gravity at 78-80*F for 14 days has been know to kill ick. This probley doesnt help much but go here. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-08/sp/index.php

lots of good info
