Dont do anything with the rock...just leave it, it will be fine....a fish only tank will not be easier. I would still leave the rock in the tank and add a piece of live rock to the tank for the critters on the rock.

*hits head*

Yeah I feel stupid now...

No salt yet huh. *learns to read*

Well it looks like Nate helped you out a bit. Cycling with the cocktail shrimp is a good idea, I wrote about that in my article.

As far as the fish you said go...keep in mind that blue green reef chromis are schooling type fish and do happier in a trio or more.

You can get your water tested next time you go to the LFS but I'd consider getting your own test kit if you do not have one already.

There's another book I'd recommend that has great up to date information and is also fun to read. Check out Reef Invertebrates by Anthony Calfo and Robert Fenner. It's a great read, it'll become your marine bible over time. I think Nate will agree with me on this.

More later...I'm in school too. Keep posting your questions, it never hurts to ask.

Psssst, you guys are missing something...

i do not have salt in the tank yet but i will be geting some soon should i add some fish plants etc

Norrec, I hope our session in chat today helped a little. Like I stated in chat, get the salt mixed to the correct specific gravity before you do anything. Next you will need to cycle the tank using the cocktail shrimp like we discussed.

If you have any other questions that come up please dont hesitate to post.

Im am at school now and when i get home ill post my test on the watter i want to have a cool colection of exotic fish i am going to start out with 2 fish when it is time i have picke out a clown fish and a chromis. i am also planing on puting in my tank soemk snals and soem dwarf hermit crabs if i can soon im hoping thet will help out on my algie problem. i have been reading teh book The simple gide to aquariums by jeffrey kurtz. it has helped me out a lot i have put in teh bakteria and now waiting for further things to do to my tank. i also have a fresh water tank set up in my room with a shark of some sort that my cuzin gave me it is doing well i was wondering if i could et up a small salt wtaer tank in ther with no fish and add in coral and live plants and live rock. i also and thinking i could add some snails and live shrimp for my other fish when i get them further down the road.

Norrec,

Could you please provide us with more information about this tank?

First, set up details. A 75 gallon tank doesn't tell us much. What kind of filtration do you have running? What kind of lights, and how are you achieving circulation? Do you have a DSB or no? Heaters? Chillers? What is the temperature at? Are you running a sump too, or is it just this system?

The live rock will gain microrganisms and bacterias back after awhile. You may want to try adding an artificial bacteria like New & Improved Cycle or Bio-spira, or maybe even Stress Zyme.

Now- water tests. Ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte, pH (high range) are the basics. Please post exact levels if you can, not just "they're okay." Exact levels help us know where you are in cycling---it seems like you had a lot of die off.

In addition, stickied at the top of this forum is an article about setting up/maintaining your first saltwater tank. I think if you read it it'll help you understand a bit more about what's going on in your tank right now.

As far as fish go---

http://www.liveaquaria.com has a great list of beginners fish in their marine section, complete with pictures and pretty accurate descriptions. Among this list are many types of damsels, and anenomefishes, some hardier tangs and wrasses. Check it out, post back with what you like (and with what is available to you through your LFS) and we'll be more than glad to help you out with it.

I dont recommend adding any fish right now though. Your tank isn't balanced enough, and the rock isn't flourishing the way it should be for carnivorous organisms.

Please post back with more details about your tank so we can help you out more. Glad to see another aquarist join the dark side.

And while I remember, what are your future plans for this tank? Do you plan on upgrading to a reef and keeping corals, or staying with fish? Do you want an aggressive tank with maybe things like lionfish and triggers, or a community type set up?

Best of luck.

Dont forget to read the beginners article at the top of this page. I promise it'll help you out a bit, and probably trigger a lot more questions.
