There's not really that much to it.

It's sorta just calcium and coral remains naturally cemented together filled with lots of tiny microorganisms and sometimes other hitchhikers. It's a living biological filter.

You can buy live rock from many different origins. For the most effective filtration, you want the most porous rock available.

It's a lot easier to say that usually Florida live rock isn't as porous as most other rock, meaning Fiji, Tonga, Kaelini, Kurpang, Marhsall Islands, etc.

The LR will be either cured or uncured. If it's cured it has already gone through the process of die off and it's pretty much safe to add to an existing display. Uncured rock will start the nitrogen cycle for you when die off occurs, releasing ammonia into the water. Uncured rock should not be placed in an existing display, only a new one IMO.

Do a quick google search for more info, or look at online dealers to learn more. HTH

Put it in a fish free tank and let it sit, 4 weeks is the "average" time for all die off to occur. Most saltwater specalist have live rock cure tanks if your looking to add to existing tank. buy uncured rock if you wanna cycle a tank its such a easy way to get started and no danger to live stock except hitchhikers.....with my last lot i was luckey enough to get atleast 6 pistol shrimp...Heh luckey me to have clicking all night in my bedroom
