It would require a completely new lighting system.

he does, however have a tank running on the same lights as me that has corals that are doing quite well eg a bubble coral, a clam and some other softies. i trust all the info on this site as no one really would have a vested interest or a reason to lie. so im just confused to this whole lighting bussiness i think ill just go n get some MH in a month or 2 lol

lol , waste of money.

Unfortunally, yes.

He was probably hoping you'd come buy new lights from them when all the corals you were keeping died. It's bad, but thats how some places run their businesses.

sounds like i got ripped off, i told my lfs that i wanted mh originally and he convinced me that the 4 by 50 w tubes that i got would be sufficient for corals in my 18 inch deep tank.
lol , waste of money.

My train of though stears towards buying the best there is so you dont have to buy something else later and have a piece of used equipment that nobody wants sitting in your closet.

Exactly.

Its def. worth it to go straight to MH....no wasted money when you decide that you want MH later on down the road.

150watt MH bulbs (10,000k) is about $130AUD and the ballast is about $200+. While Fluros are about $15-$25 (for 2ft) and ballast about $50-$70AUD.

Well, I'd say its defentinally worth the upgrade, but there is still a large price difference. Your best bet is to try and find something used, it will be much cheaper.

when reading various coral guides it is often mentioned that they need say "moderate to strong" or "weak to moderate." my question is what would 4 * 50W NO fl constitute as? would it be weak, moderate or strong "unlikly" ?
thanks

They would survive, but not thrive. The shrooms and zoa's would most likely be long and reaching for light, faded color, etc....I would try to go with a different source of light if you want to keep corals. Atleast upgrade to VHO or PC.

10 50 watt NO bulbs probably wouldn't be enough to keep anenomes. Sure you'll have higher lighting, but your still lacking serious intensity.

50 watt NO lighting would be considered VERY weak.
