Planted tank, i would go with a school of 6-8 Black Neons & 4 Ottos, as an Algae Eaters. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

If you're planning on a planted tank read up on that as well...the plants will help keep it more stable. Black neons and ottos both need groups. The black neons are schooling whereas IMO ottos are more shoaling fish. Meaning that the Black neons will be tighter and need a larger group...you may rarely see the ottos together or they may just do the fishy equilivent of chilling together (good grief did I just say chilling ). Ottos generally prefer a faster current and cooler water temps. Check out the profiles on both fish in our [link=profiles section]http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link]. ^_^[hr width='40%'] "in any case, chocolate is hardly a rare comodity." said Chaos. What I would like to add is that neither the Otos nor the Black Neons are good cycling fish. Do you have fish for this purpose available? Ingo |

Yes, 10 gallon tanks do crash quickly, even in experienced hands. Water changes, gravel vacuumings and filter maintenance MUST BE RIGOROUSLY AND RITUALLY PERFORMED. OK, here's the nuts. The larger the tank/body of water the easier it is to maintain and the more consistent the parameters become. A 10 gal is a small tank, and in the matter of just a day nitrates can soar. This has happened to me a few times. A strict and rigorous maintenance scheduled religiously adhered to is the best thing to keeping clean, healthy water. Once the tank is up and running and all cycled, I'd suggest three (3) gallons twice a week, say wednesday and saturday, or failing that five (5)gallons every five days. Your stocking seems fine. An otto or two along with some neons would look and do fine in a ten. Whichever algae eater you choose, just keep in mind that a 10 is small so you should get something that stays small. Black neons are good, as are cardinals. I'd try to keep away from livebearers in a ten ONLY because the tank will fill up very fast. Although, some livebearers such as swordtails and mollies do eat algae... Everyone abone gave very good advice, and thanks Little fish for the comment that ottos and neons, just aren't that hardy of a fish, and should not be used for cycling the tank. With that, good luck Last edited by divertran at 09-Oct-2005 09:39 |
