I have decided through careful research and I think the apistogramma family suits my fancy.
Does anyone have any suggestion on how many apistos i can keep in a 120g?
Any other recommendations tips?--plants?--driftwood?---rocks?---substrate?---lighting?(im thinking of actnic blue)---filter?(atm i have a via aqua 650 and planning to get a eheim2213)---
Since the apistogramma will be my primary fish, i was just wondering what other peaceful fish i can keep with them..mainly in the surface feeding regions and the bottom dwelling regions.

120g? this is a 4ft long tank right?

In that size tank, depending on the species i would have thought you could get away with 4-6 apistos but then again i'm no expert.

for lighting try buying 2 4ft long double flourescent strip lights, that will give you at least 1WPG. You might want to consider investing in compact flourescents, this will be more expensive but it will give you better conditions for growing plants in.

Plants will totally dependant on what lighting you choose.

Substrate, i would personally go for sand but it's up to personall preference. If you are serious about growing plants a flourite based substrate would be a good idea.

Rocks- any kind of non cal;cium based rock would be a good idea, especially if you could make some caves out of them for breeding/hiding etc.

Driftwood - Lots of it would be a good idea to give it that authentic amazonian feel.

As for other peacefull fish, lots of cories (like about 12, either 12 of same species or 6 of 2), lots of tetras (any species you fancy) but make it a nice big group like at least 15. Also some kind of algea eater such as a group of ottos (6+) or a bristle nose or two.

Just a bit of advice there from someone who'sjust set up a 55gallon amazonian.

HTH

Congrats on choosing to get a 120, you wont regret it. There are many differant things you could do with it. You can put in a bunch of apistos, much more than just 4. With twin-tube strip lights you have some plant options, but a Power Compact strip would allow you to grow anything. There are many differant fish you could keep, corries and a nice pleco for the bottom and choose some peaceful species that will get along with the apistos for the top.
