Very cool, what would you need other than the aquairum for that? A little lamp? Would any kind of filtration be needed in general or could you just keep the little cube sitting around? Im sure ferts would be needed and water changes too but the little things might be fun if they are little matinence and cheep to start.

At my lfs they have a 4" cube for sale. I have seen them before here---->http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/189/1litre5us.jpg

I was thinking of getting one, what could I keep in there? Could I have a rug of hairgrass?

Would any fish live in there?

Could do a cute planted thing I'd not put any fish in there, it'd bore them senseless and you'd be changing water daily. WQ probably wouldn't do for shrimp either, but maybe a pest snail or two?

very cute.
I think you probably could keep a shrimp or two in there, the little guys, but probably not until after it all settles and the plants are growing well.
I have seen many tiny nano cubes with fish/shrimp/snails
in them.

I think that it would be ideal for some small Plants, but without fish.

That could really be a fantastic planted tank!

There are various clamp lights available. I have this one on a 5.5g glass tank. It's a 5 watt halogen.

If you end up doing this make sure to share some pics

Tropica have their ready to go version of this here. You could do this with any water keeping object though.

So here I am once more...

Thanks for the link, watching their slide show was really interesting and gives a great idea of what can be done with small tanks/containers like this in a relatively short period of time.
