My 13 year old goldfish just died, leaving me with an empty 29 gallon (long) tank. I don't want more goldfish, since I know that tank was definitely on the small side for goldfish, and frankly I'd rather have some sort of community tank than just a couple goldfish that I get overly attached to ;-)

I haven't had a community tank in years, so I'm very open to suggestions. Also, I'm considering putting some plants in (which I've never done before, since goldfish and live plants don't seem to "get along", so what are some low-maintenance plants I could look into?

After cycling your tank, you can start with some Tetra's & Corydoras in a planted tank.
You can ask alot of Plant related questions at the Plant section & other questions, in different forums, according to the fish you like.
BTW, welcome to FP.

Could I get away with...

a pair of either honey or dwarf gourami
15 tetras
6 cories

and maybe a pleco of some sort, or would that be too much?

My lfs doesn't have a huge variety, and it's hard to know what they'd have at any given time, so it's hard to plan ahead and be any more specific than a generic "tetra" or "cory"...

Also, I have a female betta who has been living with a medium sized apple snail and a few ghost shrimp in a 5 gallon tank. Could I move those into the 29 gallon, since I've been thinking about getting something else for the 5 gallon?

ur stocking is ok..even adding the female betta (hope dont get crazy overtime), if ever u get a pleco...stick to the small ones or none at all. plants that r low maintenance (that includes light) r java ferns, java moss, anubias nana...others (requires light) r water sprite, anacharis, etc.

for plants..u may want to ook at this
