I bought my mom a 38 gallon tank for her B-day. It's 36"L x 13"W x 18"H.
She is going with fake plants, and it will have an air bubble wall, power filters, and a heater.

Anyway, a friend of mine is giving her 2 angelfish (very young), but other than that, stocking ideas are open...

I was thinking the angels, a school of a small, colorful tetra (or ??), and a school of cories. Then for the algae, maybe a few Ottos. A few ghost shrimp or a snail may find it's way in there as well.

But I am open to any ideas. Since it's my mom, I want easy, hardy fish for her.

Thanks everyone!

Christina

How about:

2 angels
6 cories (1 kind, maybe albino? They're hardy)
8 rummynose tetras (just watch the acclimating)
4 ottos (or 1 bristlenose)

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

The 2 angels, school of harlequin rasboras, a BN, and trilineatus cories (my favorites )

If you want hardy, easy fish, then I'd wouldn't get any ottos or rummynose tetras. There is a good chance of at least some of these fish dying. Instead, I'd go with tougher fish. Here is my proposed stocking list:

2 angelfish
10 lemon tetras (or other similarly sized and hardy tetras)
1 bristlenose
8 cories (pretty much any kind would be fine)

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

I want to watch on here stocking level, because I don't know how great she'll be w/ water changes, LoL. I am going to have a lot of filtration on it.

I started looking at some tetras today. I know she wants "pretty fish" which means bright colors. I didn't think of a BN instead of the Ottos, I have been trying to get a pair of BNs for a tank I have, with no luck as of yet. So I may not be able to get any.
Do lemon tetras get pretty good color? I am not sure if I have seen those around, I'll look next time I'm out.

What about a pair of Rams? Of course, that's because I want some, LoL!

So far, I'm kind of liking this list:
2 Angels
6 tetras (I'll write back w/ what I find at the LFS)
6 cories (not sure what type yet)
1 BN or 3 Ottos

I recommended harlequins because they have nice color and are good schoolers, better than tetras IMO. Lemons are nice as well as glowlights.

If you want easy-care I'd personally stay away from rams and otos which can be a bit sensitive.

For an extra splash of color add a pair of cherry barbs. They don't need to be in schools, are peaceful, and while the male has the fantastic red coloring even the female is quite pretty.

When I first got into fish I thought BNs were ugly but they've grown on me and I have them in two tanks. Quite interesting and entertaining to watch, moreso than otos but again that's just my opinion They also do a great job with algae.

Hmm, well maybe instead of a school of something, I could get her a few things that like to be in pairs...so she has some variety. Any ideas on that?
I know I have seen cherry barbs at the LFS, so those are an option.
