Okay, I've been reading all the previous postings about heaters. It seems the general rule is 5 watts/gallon. In my case, 250 watts. However, other places I've read leads me to believe I may only need a 150 to 200 watt.

Does it do any harm in buying a bigger heater than I may need?

Thanks!

The 5wpg rule for heaters will also depend on how much the heater is going to have to work. If the air temp is signifigantly colder than the water temp you'll need the 250 or more. If there's not much difference you may be fine with only 200. Get a good quality submersible set it and you shouldnt have to worry. If the tank is longer than 2' then you may want to go with 2 heaters to keep the temp more consistant.

It's only 30.5" long and I have a Jager 250 submersible on order. The difference in temperatures between tank and room should only be 5 degrees, 10 at most.

Thanks.

be careful though - i was warned that for my 55gal tank i would need between 250 - 300 wpg (or 2 150 watt heaters). i picked up one 150 watt heater(granted it was a cheap one...) and its hard to keep the temperature LOW enough in the tank. if you have a really good quality one, it'll hold the temp that you set it at, but if you pick up a cheaper one, you may have the same problem as me.

It should cut out once the temp is reached. Or only if the ambient temp drops enought to affect the tank. The only prob is if the tank volume is small and the heater kicks in and is so powerful that it pushes the temp right up too fast having a cut in cut / out effect.

Have other people actually had this happen?
