Bowl Trouble | |

If your problem is the cost of these items and not the tank then don't buy them since you aren't using them now anyway. Then you wouldn't be restricted by a tiny 3g bowl that in my opinion is not fit for anything but a couple shrimp and a java fern or moss. Although it's better than most bettas are kept in I prefer to put them in 5g tanks or larger. Anything I would put in a 3g would require heater, filter, or both. If your gonna run a filterless, heaterless tank you might as well get the biggest one you can to make up for it. Plus if you either get the tank free or put any extra money you want to spend into the lighting system then you can run a fully planted tank that will successfully support some fish without filter. It's so easy to find 10g tanks for free if you just ask around. Even people you wouldn't think would keep fish often have a 10g sitting around in their garage from some past experiment at keeping fish, amphibians, or even rodents. Clean it up, test for leaks, and your good. A standard 10g hood which costs no more than a new tank can hold up to 50watts using screw in pc sunlight bulbs from the hardware store. Might need a co2 system at that point but you can DIY with a 2 liter soda bottle, some extra air tubing, and a mix of yeast, sugar, and water. Practically free depending what you've got laying around the house. I've set up plenty of tanks on a budget and a 10g is just perfect. Big enough to be forgiving of mistakes so long as you don't stock it heavily and small enough you don't have to get a big lighting system for pc tubes or setup compressed co2 cannisters. A 3g bowl on the other hand is a disaster waiting to happen if you aren't experienced enough and don't do everything just right. I find even 5g tanks rather annoying because the lack of water volume puts such restraints on everything. My 5g is now being used as a sandbath for the degus and I aquired another free used 10g and 20g instead. So easy to setup stable planted tanks in that size range. |
