Okay, then, for the sake of experimentation, I'll be the guinea pig. I'm going to give this a try, and if I fail miserably, you have my permission to say "I told you so"!

This morning's test results (after 24 hours):
ph: 7.2
ammonia: 1 ppm
nitrite and nitrate: 0 ppm

Hi Everyone

Quick question about my 55 gallon-

It has been 2 weeks since the Nitrogen Cycle began in this aquarium. I've been testing on a daily basis, but haven't been posting the readings.

Ammonia levels peaked at 2ppm, and have been at zero for five days now. Nitrites peaked at 5ppm 6 days ago, and today tested 0.25ppm. Nitrates have been sitting at around 40ppm for the last week.

I will be out of town for most of next week and am wondering what I should do, since it's possible that the Nitrites will fall to zero before I leave. I'd prefer to just leave it the way it is until I get back, so that I will be able to monitor everything. Is that going to be okay?

Thanks!
Kari

Sounds like you're almost done .

Depending on when you leave you May be finished by the time you leave, in which case you'll know that you'll be done when you return. However, I wouldnt suggest adding fish right away when you get home. Continue to moniter the tank for a few days upon your return, and if everything looks okay you can start adding your stock slowly.

Seems like the shrimp idea worked pretty well. I've never heard of anyone doing that in a FW tank...but I have read that someone did it in a SW tank. I guess it doesn't matter though...as long as it does the job.

Babel gave you some good advice...I can't think of anything else to tell you. Congrats on almost completing the cycle. You'll have fishies to look at soon!/:'
