Zebra danios are a perfect choice, what are you talking about? Disregarding the inch rule, which doesn't work very well with schoolers, 5-6 zebra danios, which only get to around 2 and a half ish inches long, should be fine in her 14 gallon. If you've got a 3" zebra, you're either looking at a glofish or an uncommmonly big female.

so 4 or 5 would have done the 14 gal? They've picked platys anyway, which would get about 3 inches too? I said no more than 3 of them.

Oh right. I did me math wrong. 10 Zebra Danios would fully stock a 29.

6 zebra danios would not completely stock a 29 gallon tank. Even if they would grow to 3"(which is unlikely), that would only be 18". Using a 29 gallon's surface area would total 30".

Stop recommend Zebra Danios. They grow to 3" long and need 5 friends at least. 6 Zebra Danios would fully stock a 29 gallon tank, using the surface area method of stocking.

Well, went to pick fish today(but didn't buy them)
The youngest kid said "I wanna red one!"
The other kid said "I wanna orange one!"

So when they saw the platys they were like the perfect fish. I said they could get three total.

i'd go with platies, they are very easy to look after, come in many different colours, and can get lovely long fin varities.

A lot of fish are illegal to import here, partly due to the fact that we've got some sort of cichlid now gone feral up in queensland.

Are black skirts the same as black widows?

A friend of mine with two little kids saw my tanks and my bettas and fell in love with them, so went out and got half a dozen of their own. Several months later, she's sick of her fish fighting(the females in this case)and they're just not surviving. She asked me to help her set up the tank/s she has now properly, so she can actually enjoy her fish.

she's got 2 tanks, but the largest one(the one she wants to use) is 60cm by 31cm by 30cm, so it's nearly 56 litres or 14.7gal. the other is about 12 gal.

What are some easy to care for set ups for a 14 gal? She has some blue gravel, but is happy to buy a different colour, but her favourite colour is blue, so blue fish are a bonus. Her kids prefer red fish, so that's also a bonus.

She'd like some fish that wont fight each other and thinks a school sounds nice. It would be nice if a male betta can get along with them too, as she still has a few.

I thought of a few ideas, but i wasn't sure.
6 zebra/leopard danios or white clouds
2/3 bumblebee gobies + 1/2 mollies
6 cardinal tetras
trio of killifish( unlikely as they're hard to find)
some guppies
some platies
4 kulies + a betta

I decided to check here before I advised her of anything.

Also, does anyone else think it might be useful to have an article of tried and tested 10 gal set ups?

I think guppies are seen as a bit blah because they are so well known. However, there is a reason they are so popular, people are successful at keeping them healthy & alive.

I think they can look great swimming with their swooshy tails. Quite impressive if you have lovely looking males with loveley bright tails.

Live foods aren't really a problem as that's basically all they were feeding hte bettas. Female bettas aren't going to happen, as they were the ones they had the most trouble with.

I'll see which ones they like best out of guppies, the danios, the cardinals and clouds. I heard that neons can be delicate.

I'm not sure about cories, I'd have to see what's around.

Thank you!

Guppies! That is a really good idea.

I was thinking of a big school of cardinals or neons as they have red and blue on them and are very cool the way they glow. But I think guppies mentioned already are an even better idea.

Whatever you decide on, don't put guppies with a male betta. That would turn out almost as badly as two male bettas together.

I agree with Klee, go with livebearers. Guppies get my vote, and you can get them in almost any color. Also, I'd suggest a school of cories. IME they are pretty hardy guys.

So for the 14 gal:
3 guppies
6 cories (ones that stay about 2 inches)

They could watch the fry grow up and sell them back to the store.

Bumblebees, cardinals, and khulis can be a bit troublesome to care for, especially by such young and inexperienced aquarists (feeding live foods, monitoring water chemistry, etc). Furthermore, it is my personal opinion that bbgs should always be kept in at least slightly brackish water [many here have kept them (and they've thrived) in FW, I'm sure]. I'd stick to the livebearers and such (WCMMs and black skirts-ideal starting fish), or maybe a female betta or two, which fare much better in a community tank than males and seem to have a lot more character.
