I am setting up a 39 gal fresh water tank and I really like the look of Fiji live rock. I have never seen it anywhere but in salt water. It it okay in freshwater?

Thanks

Jim

I think the reason it is called 'live rock' is that it has tiny organisms growing and living in and on the rock. If you put it in freshwater, it would kill all of these organisms, at least I think it would. I don't know if it would be okay or not, but my guess would be that the rock has been in sw at some point, so it would make your tank salty.

On top of that, it'd be a horrendous waste of money. Try to find base rock at the store; they should sell it. BTW, chances are these types of rock will raise the pH of your aquarium, which may not be desirable if you're not keeping African rift lake cichlids

Alright... Will limestone have any adverse effects?

Limestone will also increase the hardness and pH of your tank A LOT. My well is on a limestone base, and out of the tap we have hardness over 300 ppm and pH of about 8.2.
