I have not yet started cycling my tank, so still have some time. But, helping the kids research the best fish for us. We currently have a small tank with a catfish of some kind and 3 Zebra Daino that we will eventually transfer over. Here is what we are thinking on fish selection:

2 Bolivian Rams
Bristlenose Pleco
10 Cardinal Tetra
3 Platys (1 male and 2 female)

We are still very new to this so you won't hurt our feelings . . . we want a good mix of fish/colors, but also want them to be happy and thrive... Thoughts please...

What kind of water do you get locally? Specifically, is it hard, or soft? The first three species you listed will do better in soft water, but the platies really thrive in hard water.

It is soft water. Any suggestions for something other than Platys?

A trio of cherry barbs would look great!

I'm a bit worried about the bristlenose Pleco in the sized tank. Any specific reasons for wanting them?

I know 38 gallons feels like a lot, but from the point of view of the fish it's not really all that much. Instead of the platys I'd up the tetra school, maybe go with smaller cories instead of the pleco. Add a few hardy plants like Java fern or anubias.

^_^
