So I live in a college town being a college kid my self but I found a 55G that someone was trashing. The tank is kind of wierd though. I will post pics in a while. It doesn't have any border supports. I filled it up with water and it didn't blow. I am wondering if I could still use it if I make some sort of support? Pics will help so I will get on that. Thanks!!!

here are some pictures that I said I would hook you all up with. Another things about the tank is that it is tinted on 3 of the sides....

id fill it up with water & leave it for a week or so, beacuse if you just left it for a couple of hours maybe it just wasn't enough time to break the seal, ya know what I mean?

Looks to me like a tank someone made themself. They did put a center brace on it... I would measure the thickness of the glass first and possibly see if the exact measurements of the tank match store bought tanks. If so you can just buy the trim that goes around the top and center brace from the manufacturer. For thickness you want at least 6mm to be safe. If the thickness is enough and since it does have a centerbrace I don't think the trim is needed. It's useful though to set glass canopies on and protect the edge of the glass.

Give it a good scrub & see if the seals are Ok. If you see anything bad, just reseal it again. Fill it with water & leave it for a week & if nothing happen, you can use it. I agree with the glass thickness, it must be 6mm at least.

The thickness is 6mm so that is good. The tank itself is 12"'s outside width while my store bought 55 is 12 3/8"'s. I guess the trim thing is out. Set two is to fill the sucker up again and see how it does. Thanks for you help everyone!! Aren't stupid college kids fun??

No :#( cause they dont seem to do that in college park...unless they do leave tanks around and I'm just not looking in the right places or others get them first .

Acrylic or glass? And when you next fill up the tank I'd suggest laying down some newspaper, dry the tank fully then place it in the center of the paper and fill carefully. Don't let any drip on the paper as this is the old leak test. If after 24-48 hours you see no water marks on the paper you know that the tank won't leak on you later.
Nice find

The tanks looks to me like what used to be called bio tanks. These were tanks assembled specifically with no borders on them to interfere with your viewing. They were used in some of the first show plant tanks. If you have access to some old fish magazines or old fish books you will see these tanks proudly displayed as show pieces.

There's a tank calculation excel spreadsheet and with that you know how secure is a 6mm tank.

MY ADVICE: 55g tanks SHOULD be constructed with 9mm glass. I constructed mine like that and did a lot of research, finding that were already plastic frames for those tanks and well, THEY ARE MADE FOR 9mm glass.

6mm is for smaller tanks in the order of at much 35g, but anyway, its your tank and its free. In your position, I wouldn't put that tank over a wooden floor or near carpets and furniture.

55g tanks (usually 2' tall) require you to get the whole arm for cleaning and aquascaping, and because this, usually the tank walls are pushed.

..... a 6mm WITHOUT braces? not what i'd recommend. :%)

Great find But I'd let the water sit in the tank for more like 2 weeksmine decided to leak after sitting a week and a half Just my thought, congratulations no matter what, heidi

Ok so its a litte bit smaller than a 55 Gal. Acording to the inside dimmetions its.....

Tank Capacity:
Litres: 176.79
US Gallons: 46.71
UK Gallons: 38.89

I have had it sitting out side on our deck full of water for the past 3 days and it does't show any signs of leaking. So far all is well!! I just have to find the money to set this sucker up!!
