Hey,

I just got a new tank..( 10 gallon ) about 3 days ago. Iam letting the filter run without adding anymore fish. ( there are 4 barbs in there now )there is a wierd smell comming out of the tank right now. Any suggustions? What is the smell?

Do you see anything algae-like on the surface? If you do, it's cyanobacteria, which smells.

If not, give your tank a couple days to adjust the parameters and everything.

Some conditioners will make it smell. Prime and Amquel are two that will do this. Newer tanks have a tendency to produce odors. Just for the heck of it, open your conditioner and take a whiff. See if it is similar.

I wouldn't worry about odor unless you smell very strong rotten eggs. This would be hydrogen sulfide, but that usually grows in older tanks where substrate is compacted. You might smell it sometime during a gravel vac, but the gases are being vac'd out. This is why gravel vacs are good because they break up the substrate and release gases that are sucked out. If you've ever stepped into a thick muck in the lake, then smelled rotten eggs, you'll know what I mean

well, your tank is probably cycling, which will make it smell pretty bad for am onth or so

it helps if you can describe the smell. or even if there is a place you smell it stronger than other places in or around the tank.
