i'm getting a 40 gallon tank for free from a family friend that had bad luck with aqariums. it comes with the lid and undergravel filter which i won't use.
i'm wondering what type of filter i should put in it?
would those big cannister filter be ok?
i've never set up any tanks bigger than 29 gallon before.
help me!

You could go with a hanging filter or a cannister filter. Make sure you filter at minimum 200 to 240 gph. 400 would be really good.

The 200 one is probably a little small for your aquarium. I was lookings it up and I found a Fluval 104, 204, 304, and 404. They measure theirs in liters per hour, in which case you would want 780 to 910 liters per hour--1,510 liters per hour would be great. So anywhere in that range should give you plenty of filtration. The 304 was rated at 1,000 liters/hour and the 404 was 1,300 liters/hour. Hope this helps.

At minimum, you want to filter 5 to 6 times your tank volume per hour. 10 times is even better.
