pretty much the same as the topic

I'm going to buy a 50 gallon aquarium, I will need to buy the tank and stand, so referring to quality, warranty (i mean, if i buy it used, what guarantees do i have if it bursts at the seams the next month ) and to a small degree price, what do you think is better?

I would say new; glass aquarium made by Hagen. Not sure what the warranty covers but you can register online at the canadian hagen site.

well, there were no responses, but i did it Anyway

in the bargain finder there were a few 50 gallon steups, tank and stand for about 300 to 600 dollars. I was uneasy, because i was concerned about the lack of guarantees. On the way to go grocery shopping today, I stopped at Aquarium Illusions, a custom aquarium store in my area, and saw a perfect setup. 48 gallon long with metal stand and glass lid for under 300 dollars. plus there was a 10% off sale.

I think I got a pretty good buy!

Now my question is, can I cycle my 48 gallon tank with the current inhabitants of my 20 gallon? I plan to use Cycle, the old gravel as a bottom layer, (it's hideous pink and blue, so it will definitely only be a bottom layer!) and the filter from my 20 gallon. The inhabitants of the 20 gallon are:

1 4.5 inch black moore (including tail)
1 otocinclus
1 female betta
3 peppered cories
3 bronze cories
2 amano shrimp

if I use the above method, can I use them to cycle the 48 long??? This is a problem because the 48 long can only go where the 20 is now. So i will have to empty out the 20 and move it in order to make room for the 48!

why do i have to make it so complicated???

I'm planning to, if it's feasible, bag the fish and plants, empty the water from the 20 into a large rubbermaid container, move the 20 gallon, put the 48 gallon long in it's place, transfer the water, gravel, plants and filter (etc..) from the 20 gallon into the 48, fill it the rest of the way with water (same temp, dechlorinated) and add the fish. I would definitely be testing the levels daily, so at the first sign of trouble, I could deal with it.

what do you think? :88)

I'm thinking leave your current fish where they are, and cycle your new tank with danios (very hardy fish often used for this purpose) Add danios, wait a month, test ammonia, if it's 0, your tank is cycled..

but i can't do that, because i live in an apartment, and have limited wall space. the 48 gal has GOT to go where the 20 is. Once the 48 is filled, there will be NO moving it. If i had the option, I would have done a fishless cycle.

WEll, I did it last night, transferred over the fish, gravel, and about 15 gallons of water from the 20 gallon. I would have transferred over my filter as well, but the lip around the edge of the tank is too big, and my aquaclear 200 doesn't fit. I took the media out, though, and put them in very fine mesh bags in the tank, so the bacteria stays alive and has a chance to colonize. I also added Cycle.

wish me luck, people!

well, it was cdn dollars, and custom made, if that makes a difference. For some reasons fish tanks are very expensive in my area! Even the used setups that i was looking at were between 300 and 600 dollars!!!!!!1

oops, i forgot to add that since i can't run the aquaclear, I added a sponge corner filter to keep the water moving and to suck up some of the waste.

ok, so I modded the tank so my aquaclear will fit, and I currently have it running, along with the sponge filter. I transferred over the old gravel and filter media and water. Everyone is doing great, the cories love playing in the bubble wall, and Oscar, my goldfish, just lounges in them like hes getting a massage! It's very cute .

As far as the cycle goes, everything is going well there as well. I have 0 ammonia on days 1, 2 and 3, and on day 2 I had a very small amount of nitrite. It was between 0.1 and 0.3, meaning that I could very very faintly see purple in my test vial. Maybe I won't even have to deal with the ammonia, that would be nice!

Oh, and I'm going to sell my 20 gal tank, metal stand and canopy to my friend for 100 bucks! I was going to ask for more, but in all honesty, how much would YOU pay for a used 20 gallon?!?

YAY! my friend is coming over to pick up the 20 today! I'll be glad to get it out of here!

And she's also bringing over her otto, she used to have 2, but one of them died when she was having problems with her tank. She says this one is very skinny, and she hopes that it'll be doing better with me.

I think I may quarantine the bugger for a week, though. I have a pretty good eye for a sick fish, but I would really hate for this little guy to be the one to kill off my beloved fish! I have an empty 10 gallon, do you think it would work to isolate him in there with a sponge filter and some plants? I'll give him some hiding places and algae tabs... Well, hopefully he'll be okay. I

really need to get my otto another buddy or 2, though, so I was excited at the opportunity to help a sick fish and give my guy some company

okay, the fish is in the tank.

When she brought him, I examined him closely for about 45 minutes while I was acclimating him.

Fins were erect, no discoloration, and he was active and not freaking out in a corner of zapping around his bag. Clear eyes, nice scales, breathing regularly. All in all a very healthy looking fish!

I acclimated him for about 45 minutes, substituting a 1/2 cup of his water with mine every 15 minutes or so, then poured him gently into the tank. HE didn't even freak out!

Just settled himself on the glass and commenced suckage. That is the most well adjusted otto I have ever seen...

OH! But there is bad news... I don't know how careful she and her boyfriend were while trying to fit the tank into the trunk of their Neon, because halfway through we heard this loud SNAP!!!! I almost started crying, I mean, I just sold it to her! But it turns out some of the black plasic stripping along the bottom had come loose from the plastic during the shoving. I felt bad, but you have to remember i was giving her the tank for free. The canopy and stand alone were worth $150, and under a year old, and i was selling her the whole setup, with driftwood, for $100. I told her we will re-silicon it together, as I have a tube here and I've done it in the past along the top. She said she was going to take it home and put water in it, and if it leaked, she'll get me to come over. I also told her that if it comes to it, we can take it to an aquarium shop and find out the cost of re-sealing it. I told her I would give her a price adjustment accordingly. *shrugs* I think I've been pretty damn good about the whole thing, it just sucked that it happened.

"GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!"

(I feel like the Professor off of Futurama!)

the tank (that I sold my friend) is fine, the otto is fine, and my tank parems are:

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0

Don't have a test for nitrate, but things are looking pretty good Soon I can get some more cories and another otto, I'm so excited! I want to get 6 albino cories for sure, I think they will look awesome against my black gravel. And I also would like to fill out my peppered and bronze schools, bringing my tank stock to:

oH! and before anyone says it, Oscar the black moor will be getting a bigger tank as he grows. For now I think a 50 gallon tank for a 4.5 inch goldfish is sufficient!

1 black moor (about 4.5 inches with tail)
1 female betta (for some reason Maria just loves it in there! Definitely NOT a solitary betta...)
3 ottos (2 currently)
6 albino cories (0 currently)
6 bronze cories (3 currently)
6 peppered cories (3 currently)

Do you think I should chill out on the cories? I would like albinos, but I realize that they are schooling fish and don't want to go overboard with the cories. I would like to be able to add another female betta or two also...
