Today, I got the idea of having a Gourami/Rainbow Tank. Just a couple of gouramis and a couple of rainbows. I was thinking: (bold are what I already have)

Flame Dwarf Gourami
Powder or Neon Blue Dwarf Gourami
Pearl Gourami
Gold Gourami
2 Australian Rainbows
2 Dwarf Rainbows
Red Rainbow
Boesemani Rainbow

Would this be fine in a 29 gallon aquarium?

I would be nervous about sticking more gouramis into the tank. Fighting over territory would happen, and they can get nasty. Besides, rainbows are schooling fish, so you should increase the schools to at least three for each rainbow species.

HTH

EDIT: I just checked out the size of Australian rainbowfish, and they reach about 5.5 inches. I remember seeing them at that size. I don't think a 5 inch schooling fish would be appropriate for a 29 gallon.

I have four boesmanis and three red irians. They like a lot of swimming room -- they're always racing from one end of my 55 gallon to the other. They might feel a bit cramped in a 29. They are beautiful fish, though.

wow, are you sure 5 inches is right?

The most common I have seen is between 3.5 and 4 inches, and not only for the Australians but the others two larger ones I listed (the Boesemani was a little larger but an average of about 4 inches).

Ok, what if I changed the plan to this:

Flame Dwarf Gourami
Pearl Gourami
3 Australian Rainbows
3 Dwarf Rainbows
3 Red Rainbows -or- 3 Boesemani Rainbows (or both if I can)

Actually, I was at the Bronx zoo, and they had a tank of Australian Rainbowfish, and they were big. I would say all of them were 4.5 to 5 inches long. IMO, all those fish you listed will seriously overstock your 29. I think it would be best to return the australian rainbowfish or put them in a bigger tank with more friends.

How about:

1 dwarf gourami
1 pearl gourami
6 dwarf rainbowfish

Or, if you really wanted to keep more than one kind of rainbowfish:

1 dwarf gourami
1 pearl gourami
3 or 4 dwarf rainbowish
3 or 4 dwarf neon rainbowfish

Oh also, we actually might be talking about two different fish. Australian Rainbowfish is a name used for a few different species, do you know the scientific name?

Yeah, the Brooklyn Aquarium has a tank full of Altums and full-size Boesmanis that's incredible. These guys do get BIG, surprisingly so.

I've seen both boesmanis and red irians that were at least 5 inches long -- maybe even a little bigger -- in a public aquarium.

But mine are full grown and they're probably 3-1/2 to 4 inches long, which seems to be a lot more common.
