Boss just told me we're moving the tank....again ....I took the opportunity to say ...well lets get a bigger tank...she said yes...so I'm picking up a 75 gallon tank this weekend.

Current substrate is sand, 30 gallon tank is running AC 200 and a powerhead. My plan would be to move all occupants and substrate and decor to the along with as much of the water as I can save. I have some Cycle in drawer, will the tank be okay or is likely to hit a mini-cycle.

Occupants:
4 Diamond tetras
4 albino corys
3 gold barbs (4 more in q-tine on my desk)
2 zebra danios that don't like company ( ).

Tank is lightly planted with java fern, hygro, and hornwort.

Sounds great Babel! At least your boss was open to getting a larger tank. I would suggest upping the tetra and cory schools to six each, before you add anything else. This tank sounds cool, make sure you keep it looking nice!

errrr *cough* thanks for the ideas guys but I wasn't asking about stocking

Current question is reguarding mini-cycle and how likely you think it is to occur.

Yes schools will be fixed as stock in this area becomes available. I'm yet to find diamond tetras that are really diamond tetras in the LFS's around here.

Sorry Babel, it's just that I didn't see any question marks. I think that there'll be a mini-cycle, especially since you're upgrading to a bigger tank. I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless you/your office became lax on maintenance.

i think you can avoid the mini cycle if you can use *all* of the substrate and water from the old tank, especially since you're putting such a small amount of fish into such a large area of tank. the bacteria you have now should be able to keep up with that stock load in a larger volume of water, especially since you don't have any bio load hogs like a giant pleco or something

giant Pleco *shudder*

Well sirbooks I am the office tank maintence...so let's hope nothing happens that will make it hard for me to keep up with it (like both of my arms broken or something ).

Now...as excited as I am about getting a 75...well I'm also just a bit nervous >.<

Hi

That's awesome babel, I'm also getting a 75 g this weekend (suppose be in on friday), It excitings
Here's another question.....
I doing a similar project this weekend. I want to seed the new filters (2 ac 300) by running them in the old tank first. How long should they be run in the old tank to effective seeding?

Consider it this way, it takes 3-4 weeks (to be on the safe side ) for the bacteria to form. If you have spare filter pads/sponges one of those could be removed, otherwise run them 3ish weeks on the old tank....an empty tank for 3 weeks, especially a 75 won't be a happy site....

Babelfish:

As you know, "life carries no guarentees". This hold true for new tanks too.
With such a small bioload, I think it's unlikely that the new tank will mini-cycle.
As you know, the bacteria is found on surfaces (I forget the technical term). You'll find it in and on the filter, in the substrate, on the plants, and on any other object in the aquarium. Moving these things into the new tank will insure the new tank is well seeded.
As for moving the water from one to the other, that does nothing for the bacteria itself, since the bacteria does not float around in the water. It does help your fish (and plants to some extent) by insuring they are going into a new environment with like water chemistry.

did boss give a reason why you can't have the big tank?
