And I'm wondering what the /real/ Name of them is... Ie- What I'd do a search for, if I wanmted to look at their compatability. I asked the guy at the store what they'd go with, and I got the following answer- "Anything to the right of the pacus" Since I'm sure that they couldn't go with EVERYTHING there, I want to do a compatability search, but, as I'm new the the whole fish thing, aren't sure of their scientific name. Help?

(Oh, and could I put them with 15 snails, a betta, and some neon tetras, from my older tank? The pet store guy will say anything for a sale. )

Welcome to fp! as fishy said we will need to know the size of your tank! What type of snails are they? If they are common pond snail i would recommend giving them back to your lfs and getting a burrowing snail which will help the plants that you have! fish1

Hey Julia

Here is the swordtail profile
http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/fw/profile.asp?id=Xiphophorus+hellerii
The colours you mention are variations on thone species.

Compatibility-wise, you are looking at other livebearers (platies, mollies, guppies - preferably with short tails as swordies can be a bit nippy) barbs, some tetras, cories, SAE and a whole bunch of other stuff

Tell you what, i'll Move this post to *getting started* so it doesnt get lost in the hubbub of the general forum and i'm sure we will get your stocking sorted out in no time

And yes, they should go fine with your other fish, just watch that they dont beat up on the betta

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Te betta's been following the Molly... He doesn't bite her or anything, just sort of swims a few inches behind her. I don't have a problem with him and the other fish, though. My tank is a 10 gallon, by the way.
