Hey dude !

Amano shrimp may be up to the task, the other shrimps no. Of course no guaranty on the shrimp with gouramis and loaches in the tank.

As for plants, you have lotsa of choices.
Crypts, mosses, java ferns, limnophila's, hygrophilas and more !

As for gravel, can use river rock pea gravel to represent a stream or go for a different look and have a grassy rice paddy with bamboo sticks etc....

Lotsa options and further research will present more ideas.
Enjoy and good luck

Amano shrimp should be easy to find, most lfs sell them as feeders pretty cheap. as for plants i love java fern because it grows anywhere and is hard to kill. i also like anubius because it has nice leaves and is also hard to kill, even my african cichlids could not hurt the stuff.

I have a 20g Asian setup...Flourite substrate, driftwood, crypts, vals, hygro. Fish include a betta coccina, sparkling gouramis, a honey gourami, cherry barbs, harlequin rasboras, and kuhliis. It's a very stocked tank but also very well planted.

Here's a pic from a few months ago:

Chris - amano shrimp are not the cheap ones sold as feeders (although they are not expensive, are sold as 'algae eating shrimp')

You are thinking of Ghost shrimp

Amano shrimp - or any other kind of shrimp for that matter - aren't too common in Australia, unfortunately. I don't even see many ghost shrimp around.

Bumble bee gobies are brackish dude_dude, so I'd leave them off the list. A 20 gallon is a bit squishy for blue gouramis as well, especially as they are quite aggressive. But the rest of your fish sound great!

Indigenous Australian "ghost shrimp" (Paratya australiensis) are, in fact, Atyids and thus more closely related to Amanos (C. japonica) than North American "ghost shrimp" (Palaemonetes spp.)

Your stock list sounds good as long as you realize the ghost shrimp may get eaten. I've had bettas that left them alone, and those that felt they were a fantastic snack The gouramis might go after them too...mine love to hunt down, stalk, and eat MTS!
