Hi

On the forum fish keepers are talking about using 1" of "Kitty Litter" topped with 2" to 3" of gravel

A few questions

Is this a good idea and will the plants like?

Can I use any "Kiity Litter" and what about the chemicals in it?

Won't it seep through the gravel and cloud the tank?

Will it degrade after time?

Thanks

Anything that is scented is usually a bad idea. Most kitty litter by nature has to be scented. This sounds like a sketchy proposition.

Unscented, chemical free kitty litter can make a good plant substrate under gravel. You'll want to stay away from the clumping kind. Just get the cheap clay based stuff. It shouldn't degrade over time and has some good nutrients in it that your plants will appreciate. It also shouldn't cloud your water. Just treat it like laterite.

Check and see if your hardware store has some kind of conditioning clay. It's similar, and even cheaper. If not, and you're concerned about additives to the kitty litter, then try Schultzs Aquatic Plant Soil. It's also a clay. Of course, if growing plants, Flourite, Laterite, or Eco Complete are better choices, but more expensive.
