Quick question I have an empty 125 at the moment. I have three koi from my pond that i have to bring in for the winter. I would like to put something else in with them. I was thinking tinfoil barbs. What are some of my other options

Hi there,
depending how big the koi are, they will probably
be sufficient stocking for a 125.

Tinfoil barbs are tropical fish, and should be kept
in temps around 80F. Koi will not do well at such
high temperatures.
They are also not compatible food wise either.
Weather loaches would be my only suggestion as
a tank mate.

How large are the Koi, and how large is your pond? I'm assuming that it freezes completely in the winter and that is why you need to bring them in.

Remember they are huge waste producers and as such you really can't over filter the tank for them. If only bringing them in for the winter I don't really think you need any tankmates for them and they would be best just alone.

The pond is thebiggest plasic linered one you can get. I would buy a floating heater for the pond but im not so sure it would work as i have no experience with them. They are not huge koi all around 6 inches there are 5 of them

Hi there,
just keep in mind that at maturity, Koi
require about 1000 gallons of pond space
each.

They should be fine in the 125.
Id keep just them and noone else.

Not sure how cold it gets where you live,as there is no indication of where you live, so unable to determine if the pond would freeze solid or not. The main thing in wintering over the Koi in the pond would be that the pond doesn't freeze solid and then keeping a small area open on the surface for gas exchange. This could be accomplished with the floating type heater, if your weather isn't too extreme.

Depends where you are in Canada.
Im in BC, and our ponds, unless really
tiny, dont freeze solid in the winter.
It rarely gets that cold.
A pond heater would be the way to go.
Now if youre in Winterpig (lol winnipeg) or
Ontario or Quebec, a pond heater may not even
keep the thing unfrozen at all.
