I just got a 20G Hex from a friend of mine and my mom is re-sealing the sides. I need ideas for stock. It won't have gravel in it for 2 days because the sealent needs to "skin" for 5 minutes then Bond and Cure for 48 hours. So on Tuesday the Under Gravel Filter will be put in then the Gravel will be put in also. The Water will be be put in when we buy the Hang on Back Filter(to make sure filtration is efficient).

After the sealent is applied(when mom starts LISTENING to me) I'll take pictures and I'll have a "log" for it.

ANYWAYS...BAck to the subject I would like a Cichlid tank but most of my options aren't available. I've Called Petsmart AND Petco and talked to the people about 3 of my Choices:

Kribs or Kribensis
Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid
Rams

Petco carries Kribs occasionly and Petsmart carries Kribs only as like a "Monthly Special".

So, I want a Cichlid(at least 1) and I'm open to a community tank.

Any Ideas?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

I can't get the Rams as Petco and Petsmart don't carry them =[ I'll probably be going to a Petco in Manchester next week so I'll check there.

Other then that I like that stocking idea. *claps for vincent*/:'

Are the chains really the only options you have? Check your yellow pages, you should be able to find a few LFS in your area. You mentioned manchester, but there's got to be two dozen manchesters in the states at least. My guess of course is NH, but in anycase check around, you may find stores where you didn't know there were ones . LFS's are often able to order for you specifically as well rather than you being limited to what the chains have in stock.

If you're getting a HOB don't bother with the UGF, more often than not they're more trouble than their worth. Some people do well with them, but other times people never bother to maintain them and they end up chock full of gunk. (I've seen it before it's not pretty ).

Keep in mind that hex tanks generally have less surface area then the same gallons in a 'standard' tank. Less surface area = less stocking.

That all being said....I think kribs would go quite nicely. You could build up a lot of different cave areas with plenty of viewing since it's a hex. Add some plants and a few surface fishies. I have kribs and WCMM in my 2' tank atm.

Oh, and one other thing, make sure you test the tank for leaks after sealing it but before starting to stock it. Place some newspaper or cardboard on the floor. Put the tank ontop and carefully start adding water. Let it stand overnight. If you see any water spots you'll know there's a leak somewhere. It's always better to test first rather than find out after you've spent 4 weeks cycling and are stocked

^_^

EDIT: PLEASE!! get that goldfish out of the tank and into a pond ASAP pleeeeaaasseee Goldfish are too big for a 20 gallon. Smallest they could really be stocked in is a 75 for a fancy and 125 for a 'common'. Even if it's small it's going to get stunted from early on. Stunting = yucky painful not good for the fishy death.

lol ... It's my mom's Gold Fish. And we don't have room for a pond lol... I'm quite sure if we did mom would put him in there in a splash lol

Yeah tomorrow when I get home from school(about 4PM) I'll be taking the Hex Upstairs to the bathtub and I'm going to fill it then leave it in there and check it at like 9(be aware it'll be staying the tub until wednesday afternoon). So NO worries there...Mom just wants the thing to like work

And I've been bugging mom since January for $550 and an iPod($250) for Christmas(yes that's all) and I plan on buying a 72G Bow Front tank... If I was getting like $800 or so I'd get this 95 Gal Tank that it's like bow front in one part...Let me see if I can get a link to it...

*Goes to find Link*

Can't find one but if you go to Petco anytime soon look for a 72 Bow Front for $229.99.

I wouldnt suggest the bathtub, they're not actually flat. What will happen is you'll get uneven distrubution of pressure which is more than likely to pop the seals and you'll have to start all over again.

I understand you don't want the risk of 20 gallons of water all over the kitchen floor, but add it slowly in the afternoon, unless it cracks the seal it won't be a fast leak and you'll be able to empty the tank before you get a flood.
Never move or place a tank on an uneven surface filled.

"$550 and an iPod($250) for Christmas"

Wow, I'm lucky to get a box of bandaids for my birthday no wonder people like stuffmas

I can't get the Rams as Petco and Petsmart don't carry them

I work at petco and I had my manager order me some blue rams so I know they can get them in at yours too. Just find out who the manager is and ask them to order them in, it'll take a week maximum.

you might want to go check out my thread on this: only mine
is a 20g tall witch is kinda similar.
It is in the "General Freshwater" forum and under the name:
What would YOU put in a 20g tall. I'll bet there is some-
thing mentioned ther that there isn't here.
