New tank suggestions for my starter fish please | |
BlackNeonFerret Enthusiast Posts: 281 Kudos: 137 Votes: 30 Registered: 18-Jan-2006 | As babel said, save up for a bigger tank if you want more fish. Firstly, platies, being livebearers, will breed a lot so if you have a male and two females you may have more than 3 platies soon. Secondly, IMO platies are very active fish. I used to keep them in my 15, and the big ones seemed too small for that, and my mum keeps them in her 28 and they're happy in there. So i suppose, yes i am saying your tank is too small for three platies and a betta, especially mixed platies. sorry. |

It's too small for platies period, just like BNFerret said, they're livebearers. You've got a femail you will have babies. Soon you'll have dead fish soup. I really do think you should either get a larger tank, a 2 foot or larger if you want to keep the platies. If you want something for the 30L bowl, a betta will work, not both together for the long run. ^_^ |

The most popular seems to be Hikari Betta Bio-Gold pellets they work for my guy. Also if you want to make your guy happy feed him some blood worms. I would go with 1xMale Betta 1xOttocinlus Catfish 1xMale Cherry Barb 2xFemal Cherry Barb Some Java Fern and some Anubias "No whammy, No whammy, No whammy, STOP!!" 1984-Michael Larsen On Press Your Luck |

leeadam Fingerling Posts: 20 Kudos: 5 Votes: 0 Registered: 25-Apr-2007 | i got my betta the other day a lovely blue colour fading into red towards the end of his fins...my daughter has named him king james??? dont ask why. he is now in the 10 gallon tank with the platies, he seems quite happy and hid for first couple of hours but was soon touring the tank. they are interesting to watch he is quite active and is eating well im gonna get some of the Hikari pellets for him..do you think the platies will try and nab them first?? they seem to like chasing their food about and really active swimming as a trio. i also got some bloodworm for them all which the betta really ate down quick. another good thing is my levels seem near on perfect im checking each day with strips but may by a liquid test kit. and i have been doing 25% water changes 2 times a week...so hopefully they will all be happy. ill try and get pic. thanks for tips. |

Should it be done in this bowl, definitely not IMO. As I said before most bettas prefer little to no water movement in a warm tank. Ottos thrive in cool fast moving waters. It's the same reason polar bears don't do well in central africa. ^_^ |

fandan Hobbyist Posts: 130 Kudos: 43 Registered: 24-Mar-2007 | hey just my input on a 30L bowl. i got one as my first tank and had all kinds of fish in there and they kept dying. i was water changing 50 percent every week, i put in an undergravel mini filter and they kept dying and i slowly came to realise that you cant put much in a 30L bowl! any way thats how i got into fish keeping and that was only a few months ago and now i have 3 tanks and am planting my first 4 foot planted tank. i still dont really know what im doing but this is a warning, its addictive! (its not really for your daughter!) any way my 30L has my male betta and 3 white clouds with a few plants and they are very happy. i do a 15% water change every week and every body is happy. betta are great fish by the way and way good luck |

leeadam Fingerling Posts: 20 Kudos: 5 Votes: 0 Registered: 25-Apr-2007 | hi well my fish are in a 45 litre 10 gallon bowl now..the betta seems very happy and quite nosey if you put anything in tank he is there swimming around my hand. the platies are nice and activeand stick together the betta does not seem bothered by them, im doing a 25 % water change twice a week at moment tank been going 5-6 weeks now. i know bettas like still slow moving water and mine has spots he likes to rest in away from filter current inside the rock thats in bowl or near top resting on leaves but often he will spend 15 mins darting back and forth through the bubbles and flow alsmost like he playing..? do they often do this.? |
