New tank with no clue?! | |
lilmama147 Small Fry Posts: 1 Kudos: 1 Votes: 0 Registered: 29-Jul-2006 | i have been cycling a 20g tank for a while now but i have no clue what fish to put in it. I have 1 rainbow shark in my 5 gallon teporarily until i get the other fish(on account of that ive read that you have to add fish as he stakes out his territory to keep him occupied) ive been doing tons of reasearh and still havent gotton a clear clean cut answer as to what fish to put in with him. The fish that come up the most are tiger barbs, gold and zebra dainos, and blue, gold, opaline Gouramis,(all fish that like to be in groups(but i want a varity)and Demon Fish(which ive never heard of). So i guess my question is what would be the best fish to put in with him (and number of fish). As well as the most hardy plant to add to the tank for the fish to hide and nibble on. |

In terms of fish a rainbow shark gets a little bit big for a 20 gallon , if its small you have lots of time anyway. So I would go with the following - 1 rainbow shark - 8 zebra danios - 3 ottos - 1 male dwarf gouramis |

You may get a better strike rate for responses if you change thread title to "tankmates for juve rainbow shark". round here we get lots of people saying I have an empty *size* tank what shoudl I put in there? But your question is more specific and challenging... we like that sort of thang. Good luck getting help (sorry I am not rainbow au fait and cannot point you in the right direction) ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

As for the demon fish the only fish that comes to mind is Geophagus Jurupari, which is a south american cichlid and gets too large to be housed in a 20g. Another good plant to start out with is the java fern. Very hardy. BTW what lighting do you have on this tank. |

Fish Guy's list is good, but minus the gourami if you intend to use a filter that produces lots of surface movement. Gouramis don't seem to fancy fast moving water at the top since they are air breathing fishes afterall. The rainbow shark with danios and ottos sounds just about right for a 20g.
