Hello all,

I have a 20 gallon cold water setup and need some ideas stocking it. Here's what I have; 20 gal, 3 live plants, small cave, dive mask , hood, light, filter, medium gravel, aerator, thermometer, dechlorinater.

My previous experience includes... 1 betta.

I'm looking for a good mix of shape and color, and hardy, low maintainance fish

Thanks in advance

Hardy (ie not fancy) guppies, or White Cloud Mountain Minnows may work.

I'd highly suggest getting a heater for the tank however. Even a 20 gallon tank will have temperature swings from the fluctuations from the light being on during the day and off at night.

Stocking of course will also depend on what part of the world your in and what your air temps are in your house.

^_^

Id say go with 8-10 White Cloud Mountain Minnows, 1 weather loach or dojo loach, and 1 or 2 Paradise fish.

I live in New york and home temp ranges between 65 in the winter and 85 summer days. If I heat the tank, what fish at what temp should I get? And by hardy I mean disease resistant. I don't have experience with sick fish. Thanks

Well if you heat it you can get a very wide range of fish. Such as guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, barbs, tetras, rasboras, danios, gouramis( dwarf ), cories and there is sub-sections to each of these catagories. Tell us what your interested in and I'm we can all help you out with your stock.

You might try going for North American natives. We have some very interesting and beautiful fish, and it's a shame most people don't know about them.

Depending on where you live, you could probably catch some Darters and Shiners for a nice community tank. Or you're not interested in what's in your specific area, AquaBid usually has some interesting North American natives.

I have a 25 gallon tank with California Roaches (a native minnow here) and a Prickly Sculpin, and the sculpin is probably my favorite fish.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Keeping native fish is very interesting and fun. If you wanted fish from the LFS I would go with the following:
8 Neon Tetras
6 Harliquin rasboras
4 cories
2 ottos
