Hello,

I set up a small 2 gal hex tank for my Mother-In Law. It just has 2 White Clouds in it. I don't have any of the water parameters from her tank. She says she changes some of the water every two weeks or so. The tank has a small incandescent bulb and an ugf.

The problem is a green/brown algae. I have never had a serious problem with it, so I don't really know how to get rid of it. Can anyone help me with this? I have heard it is very common.

Thanks for the ideas.

Alec

Honestly I don't think those white clouds are very happy in a 2 gallon. For one thing they are schooling fish, for another they're very active swimmers. I'd reccomend taking the WCMM's back to the store, have her pick out a nice betta and a 10 -20 watt heater. She can do 100% water changes weekly, and not have an issue with algae again. I'd place the blame on the UGF, and incandescent bulb (incandescent is good for algae not good for plants).

Would you also recommend doing away with the ugf? We tried a Betta at first, but it died within 24-36 hrs. She was a little disappointed to say the least.

Also, should the 100% water change be done at once, or a little every few days over the course of a week?

Thanks for the info.

I would get rid of the ugf. Changing the water each week would disrupt it. I would return them and allow the 2 gal hex to sit overnight (no fish, just water) to get rid of Chlorine. Then get a nice betta

Also the aglae could be from being in sunlight or overfeeding.

Don't give up on the idea of a betta.

Adding a couple plants can help with the algae problem and still provide enough space for the betta to be happy.

Some bettas aren't the best when you get them, some stores don't look after them properly . IME bettas are actually rather tough little critters, and I still say one of your best bets for that tank.

Get rid of the UGF, clean out the tank with just plain water, no detergents or cleaners , and start off fresh with a betta.

I have three of those 2g hex tanks, and agree that the UGFs are pretty much useless.

They really are nice tanks for bettas. Buy one from a lfs you trust, look for an active fish with good coloring.

Good luck
