I started cycling my tank with 6 platys and now I am left with one They didn't die due to the ammonia, I think it was due to the ph (the lfs didn't have any shells in there tanks and my did. Yes, the shells are out now)I am just starting my second week of the process and have been adding "Stability". I am wondering if anyone know how long this will take with only one fish?? I tested yesterday for nitrites (just curious) and there where none. Is there anything that I can do, or should I just admire Sparky, with patience Oh ya my tank is 75 gallons. thanks again

With a tank that size it's going to take a LONG time for one little platy to produce enough bioligical contribution to cycle the tank. I would suggest a few more fish of a hardier species such as danios or a fishless cycle.

You definitely will want more fish than that. It will take ages for the tank to cycle with one platy. If I were you, I'd get more (your original six sounds like a good number to me) or else get other hardy fish. Danios are often used (as M.J. suggested); I've used white clouds and they work well, too. Are you testing for ammonia? Do you have any ammonia showing up?

i agree with the rest...1 fish aint enuf, do get more.. the hardy ones much preferred...but, make sure that the fish u get r the ones u keep, people buy danios coz its gud to start a tank..but, sometimes, when they are done, they just toss out the fish, so sad...so..make sure u like the hardy fish ull be gettin.

I started with the platys because I wanted to keep them. Also I have the test kits and the highest I have let the ammonia get was 1 ppm. So with ammonia present am I going to be able to add more fish?

If you want platies, get some more. If you've sorted out the problem that caused them to die the first time, they should be fine. Platies are pretty tough, so I'd add more, even if there is some ammonia. Just keep a close eye on your ammonia levels. If, based on your water's pH, the ammonia gets to the danger level (you should have that information with your test kit), do a big water change. Otherwise, it's just a waiting game. Cycling with fish takes a LONG time -- I did it and I thought it would never end.
