A: 3 goldfish, 1 pleco, and a newly added Fish that's used for fish bait in a (maybe) 15 gallon tank.

argh!!! i mean, i'm not too much of a fish addict or know-it-all (that'd be my sister), but i do have some standards in just general animal treatment!!!

i'm living in a host family and they just bought thier monster another fish. i'd already informed them that thier tank was too small when they bought thier 3rd goldfish a month ago but they didn't listen to me. And when i saw Thomas with a fish bag in his hand i immediatly told my host Dad that he was making a huge mistake and he was being an absolute idiot. But NOOOOOO.

and that's not even the half of it...it would be one thing if this was the first time and it was only with fish (i apologize if i offend you guys because i have this way of thinking. the way i see it, if my host family didn't make the same mistake as everyone else someone else would have bough tthe goldfish and done the same thing). bUT this kid is a terror to humans AND animals. there is a cat which he throws, squashes, and other such things. he does not know how to care for animals, and my host family doesn't even try to teach him!!! it gets me so irritated!!!!! ARGH

i'll probably add on more comments/rants about this subject later on......i mean, this has surpassed stupidity and ignorance.

Honestly, you've done what you can, some people will never listen to reason. While I hate to always blame parents it is in a parents power to say "no" and your host parents seem like they've been unable to. I would suggest trying to sell them on the idea of a nice colorful community tank, but considering the way that kid treats animals I think the fewer in the house the better.

and any chance of getting a better host family .

i don't want you to think i have a bad host family. the are SUPER nice! it's just the dad isn't the smartest about a lot of things (like this) and he NEVER does any research on anything! he's an impulsive buyer, if he sees it and likes it he buys it. but they are so nice with me and really make me feel like the daughter of the family. but the kid is a terror...but i'm starting to understand him.

I agree with Babel. You have done what you can, now comes the hard part...keeping quiet. If you cannot find a new host family, you will have to stay with them, and make the best of things. I know it is hard to live with someone with so little respect for living animals, but some times it must be done. Good luck.

Maybe you can hopefully possibly convince them of doing lots of waterchanges...maybe .

That's not going to help the fact that the fish they have in there really need a 150 gallon pond, that they're likely common goldfish that exceed 2 feet in lenght, but it's the most you can do when people just don't have respect for living things.

luckily they (the parents) do keep the tank spotless and they change the water frequently enough.

new fish died right after i posted. i knew it would. because they bought it at a fishing store and the guy didn't put any air in with the fish and water. so yeah...

Aughh!! I feel your pain. I got both of my siblings into fish keeping and they were both very stupid about it. My brother has two hatchetfish, 1 silver dollar, 1 betta, 1 dojo loach, 1 pleco and 2 platys in a 10 gallon tank that has NEVER BEEN CLEANED. Never, ever. not once. He's freaking 19 and I'm 16, and mom's all, "clean it for him." Like he isn't old enough. And my 32 year old sister has a goldfish with her cichlids... I'm like..."How is that alive?!" Luckily, at least she's getting on track right-- finding goldie a new home, etc.

It's so hard to keep quiet... But some people just don't get it.

you dont need to put air in the fish bag.

It helps, but fish can go for a few hours without air in the bag,

The sad thing, is that the little boy is probably going to grow up to be a bully and who knows maybe and ax murderor. If it were me I would at least threaten the kid, or call animal control on him for his cruelty.

Or... is it ok for him to do that to the cat?

Marika, maybe get them to come on here? Get a picture of Bruce the Oranda (Molly? Help us out here ) and show it to them. That's a huge goldfish, if you didn't know.

In the end, you can't FORCE them to do anything. However, you can show them how they are wrong, and perhaps show them pictures of some better fishy choices. I'm sure your little brother would like the colorful livebearers or something like that.

First of all, can I laugh at the fact that Janna and you are sisters and didn't realize it at first?

Ok thanks now on to the serious subject of animal abuse...
I agree with I think it was you Babel to try and get them on this site (change your name so they won't know that post was from you? Babel help with that fact, we don't want her in trouble with the host family) And show them what everyone here agrees to be the right and proper way to treat fish. See if you can find a book about fish keeping especially one on Goldfish, and one that edges towards the bigger the tank the better, yes I know pond is the best, but right now we just want a better life for the poor fishies...and I'd just try to leave it in a very obvious place so that your host parents have easy access to it. Maybe even go to the trouble of finding the pages that specifically mention tank size and (don't shoot me book lovers) bend the book back some so the book tends to open there on its own...

]:| Now as for the cat, I can't think of anything except try and help the poor cat hide out with you...try to protect from the child who knows no better and who at this rate won't learn any better until someone busts his hind quarters each time he mistreats the cat ]:| It isn't right for parents to allow their children to abuse animals and it really tends to get me upset, because I lvoe my animals so much, and lost one of my cats to an idiot's abuse, and he was a sweetheart...all that little boy is gonna end up doing is making the cat really mean and vicious, if he doesn't kill it...]:|
