Ok, I can't figure this out....I looked in my tank today, and I have a bunch of little snails!! How do I get rid of them?!?! I didn't ever have a snail. I've tried the cucmber slice but I want to get rid of them before they get out of control!

best bet is to put some pennies in your filter, snails will be gone in a few weeks.

But they are in my underground filter! Where do I put the pennies for that? Will the pennies hurt the fish if I put them directly into the tank?? What do the pennies do anyway?

Pennies are made of copper therefore, copper kills snails Note that if u have other crustaceans (shrimps, crayfish etc.) in your tank they would be harmed too probably die.

Gee

Edit: I guess u'll just have to throw them in your tank!!

Isn't there a certain date that you havta use for the pennies? Something like pennies before or from 1982?

Snails cant take the copper from the pennies. If it's a UGF, then maybe try making a small baggie from the netting that fruit and vegetables come in. You could also probably use a pair of clean nylons...

EDIT: Helps if you press "post" after writing a reply rather than waiting 2 hours .

I believe it's prior to 1976 pennies that have more copper, my dad uses them for one of the chemestry labs he does.

Ok, I have a 29 Gallon tank, how many pennies should I throw in my tank/filter??? I'll do a combo of old and new pennies, just to be on the "safe side" LOL! Will the copper harm the fish??

Copper doesnt harm most fish....whats your stocking list ?

I'd use older pennies, give them a quick rinse in salt and vinegar then rinse off before putting them in the tank. The salt and vinegar will form a weak acid to remove a thin layer hopfully removing any oils or nasties that might be on them from a few thousand people handling them .

Ok, the whole copper penny thing isn't working....I cleaned out my filter and hd about 30 in there! plugging up everything! I tried the lettuce thing last night and that didn't work, tried a piece of cucmuber, and that didn't work either....They weren't attracted to it!

I've taken all my plants out, and are picking the snails off...27 on one plant this morning!

What else can I do??

You could get a fish that eats snails like a female betta or a loach of some sort. My angel will occasionally eat some snails.

Snails are pests & it's not easy to eliminate them from your tank, once they got there.

One word of caution is that if there are loads of them in the UGF and they die off from the copper, you could have an ammonia spike.

Is the die off more slow with pennies?

I'd try to bait as many as possible with lettuce and stuff first to ge the population down.
