Im thingking of starting a 55 gal. tank which would be a step up from my 20 tall, but I can't decide whether to go with sand or gravel. Personaly i think sand looks better, but i have heard that the sand could compact and make it hard for my plants to grow.

What is everbodies opinion on this topic?

Gravel is better for plants, and is easier to maintain and clean. However, sand does look much cooler, at least to me. If you buy some Malaysian trumpet snails though, they can help keep the sand from compacting, and save you a little bit of worry.

Ultimately, it is your call. If you can handle a little bit more tank upkeep, I'd go with sand.

half eco complete and half black sand. I love that substrate and have had no problems with it. I'm going to set my next tank up with the same mix.

Gravel is better for the Plants, but Sand is more natural. You have to stir the Sand every couple of months, so it don't compact.
