Making sure you replace the carbon in the filters on a regular basis will help remove any of the smoke particles that get into the water.

You can buy fairly inexpensive air purifiers that have carbon insets that plug directly into the wall for the air, that would also help keep the smoke out of the water.

I'm sure you dont want to hear it but if you're that concerned about the fish, please be a bit concerned about yourself too .

Yeah, I smoke like a chimney, so I do run carbon now and again. I also make sure that any air intakes for filters and aerators are at floor level, thusly avoiding most of the smoke while its at its most toxic. I couldnt say my incidences of fish breathing problems or cancer are above the norm, in fact I hardly ever see such things happen.

Smoking really bothers birds, certain rodents like russian dwarf hamsters, and even some cats. Its certainly not good for reptiles either, they can be especially susceptible to smoke induced respiritory conditions, but its not a biggie for fish as long as you have toxin removing filtration and air intakes are placed sensibly , or even in another room where you dont smoke. If your airlines are picking up nicotine staining its seriously time to move the fish though.
