![]() | Starting a new tank with Corrys? |
eminer1254![]() Fingerling Posts: 48 Kudos: 54 Votes: 0 Registered: 14-Apr-2005 ![]() ![]() | Hello All, I've finally gotten my second tank and am the process of setting it up. For my first tank I used a fishless cycle, which worked fine. This time I'm thinking of using six false-Julli corrys I have in my first tank. Does anyone have any opinion on this? Will the corrys do the job? Thanks Eric |

Corys are not considered the hardiest of corys, additionally as they spend their time on the bottom of the tank where all the waste accumulates they're at an increased risk for death from cycling. Since you already have a tank established I'd suggest moving some of the substrate from the established tank to the new tank. Don't take too much or you're likely to cause a mini cycle in the first tank. Another option is that if you've got time before adding stock to the second tank to put the filter for the new tank on the tank that is already established. Let it run and develop a bacterial colony for 3 to 4 weeks then move it to the new tank. You'll reduce the ammount of time required for actually cycling that tank, and you'll decrease the risk to any fish you add. If you're doing a fish cycle the best fish for it is to use zebra danios. ^_^ ![]() ![]() |

I suppose I could take a Bio-Wheel from the older filer and put it in the new one An excellent idea. You may still see a small or mini cycle in the new tank, so you should still watch it. But, it will basically be cycled with some biological bacteria. There is always a bigger fish... |

Take one of the 'Bio Wheels" from the Penquin 350 filter on the 46 gl tank and put it into the new Penquin 200 filter on the new tank. Then take the Corrys from the old tank and add them to the new one. There may be a mini cycle but it shouldn't be too bad. Let me know what you think Eric |

Your plan sounds good...except that the water in cycled tanks doesn't contain much of the good bacteria. A better idea is to take some of the gravel from your old tank and either put it on top of the gravel in the new tank (if its the same color) or put some of the old gravel in an old stocking (pantyhose) and set it near the filter intake in the new tank. That way you will have the good bacteria without mixing it in the gravel. Also if there are any rocks or decorations in the old tank that you could put in the new one temporarily, they also have bacteria attached to them. Using the biowheel is a great idea though so do that too. |
